Scottish Water Howden

Scottish Water Howden

Emtec Energy was selected by Scottish Water to lead a innovative project at Howden Water Treatment Works in Selkirk, marking the first time Scottish Water has integrated solar power with battery storage at a water treatment facility. The installation includes a 1.2MW Solar PV system paired with a 1.8MWh DC battery storage unit. The system, comprising 2,112 solar panels and four 50kW inverters, was meticulously designed to optimise energy generation while avoiding the typical costs and delays associated with G100 device installation and DNO witness testing. This project sets a new standard for sustainability in the utility sector, highlighting Scottish Water's commitment to innovative and eco-friendly solutions.

Faced with stringent environmental requirements during the late design stages, Emtec Energy quickly adapted by employing a unique pitch for the solar mounting system, combined with concrete ballast blocks to ensure zero ground penetration. This innovation was critical in preventing contamination of the water treatment processes and preserving the local environment, maintaining biodiversity on site. The result is a highly efficient system that delivers a continuous 200kW of power, both day and night, enhancing operational efficiency and shortening the return on investment timeline for Scottish Water. Emtec Energy’s successful execution of this project underscores their leadership in providing sustainable solutions in complex environments.
